Date/Time: June 17, 2020. 4:00 - 5:00 PM
Topic/Skill: Reading comprehension and vocabulary: focusing on social media and Black Lives Matter.
Feedback provided to tutee: Ahmad is a very strong speaker but struggles with pronunciation and fluency when reading. He has been very interested in the recent protests and is active on social media, so I felt he would be very engaged in this lesson. We discussed new vocabulary such as "amplification", "provoke", and the difference between "employer", "employee", and "employment". I also corrected Ahmad's pronunciation while reading and helped him break words down into smaller sections to make pronunciation and understanding easier.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned the importance of including the part of speech in vocabulary definitions. Particularly when discussing variations of the same root word, such as "amplify" and "amplification", the part of speech was very helpful to Ahmad when differentiating between the two definitions. Many times, when we used the word in a sentence, Ahmad was able to identify the part of speech for clarification. Using sentences and the part of speech together is when Ahmad gained the best understanding of the new vocabulary words.
