Topic/Skill: Talking on the phone

Feedback provided to tutee: Kubra and I spoke on the phone instead of Zoom so that she could practice speaking over the phone. Kubra practiced listening skills that are important when you do not have facial cues to help with context clues. We discussed some phrases she can use when speaking on the phone to ask people to speak more slowly or clearly.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned the importance of facial expressions in communication for English language learners. I did not realize how much language learners rely on non-verbal context clues to feel more confident in their listening skills, and to fully understand the message being conveyed. I also learned the importance of modeling and practicing in building students' confidence. Simply by practicing speaking on the phone with me, somebody she is already comfortable speaking with, my tutee already felt more confident to speak to strangers on the phone.
