Topic/Skill: Understanding accents

Feedback provided to tutee: To learn the difference between American, British, Australian, and Irish accents, Ahmad and I listened to videos breaking down Australian and Irish accents. He is already able to distinguish between American and British accents, but struggles with British accents as compared to other non-American accents. We spoke about the use of the "d" sound instead of "t", the speed of speech, and other factors that contribute to accents.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned about the importance of breaking pronunciation into small segments. I now have a better understanding of how difficult it is for ESL learners to differentiate between accents. I learned how to pick out a few common aspects of each accent that they can look out for in order to better recognize what accent they are hearing.
