Topic/Skill: Feminism in the U.S.

Feedback provided to tutee: Ahmad and I read an article about the history of feminism in the U.S. I helped him understand the cultural differences in the role of women between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia and understand some of the arguments for and against feminism that he may hear in conversation in his classes or with friends. We discussed idioms such as "struck a nerve" and terms like the "suffrage movement" to better understand the article. I also provided a review of some pronunciation rules, such as when a vowel is long when it is followed by an "e".

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned how to discuss a controversial topic in a professional manner. I went into this lesson realizing that cultural norms for women between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are very different. I wanted this lesson to be based in teaching about a movement in the U.S., rather than invalidating Ahmad's cultural norms and beliefs. I was successful in this, and I was surprised at how receptive Ahmad was to the topic and how excited he was to learn more about this aspect of American culture.
