Topic/Skill: Dating culture in the U.S.

Feedback provided to tutee: Ahmad and I discussed idiomatic phrases and cultural norms regarding dating in the U.S. I explained the term "to go dutch", and the implications that come with paying together or paying separately. We also discussed different places you could go on a date, and typical dating etiquette.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned about dating culture in Saudi Arabia and other cultural norms. Ahmad said he likes to take people out for dinner as a thank you when they have helped them with something. He was wondering if taking someone for dinner would automatically imply that it is a date. I learned about the importance of addressing dating culture for ESL students, especially older students, because students who come from countries where dating culture is less common, or just very different, they can find themselves in very awkward social situations.
