Topic/Skill: Vocabulary and culture surrounding hospitals
Feedback provided to tutee: Ahmad requested that we talk about hospitals in this tutoring session. I focused our lesson primarily on vocabulary, phrases, and experiences he would see in different healthcare situations, including a check-up, an emergency room, or a walk-in clinic. I helped Ahmad differentiate between "patient" in the medical sense, and "patient" the adjective. We also discussed some common illnesses that doctors may ask about in an appointment.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned how to explain differences in vocabulary based on parts of speech. There were several words that Ahmad knew the definition of in one part of speech but not in another. For example, Ahmad knew the word "diagnose", but he did not know the word "diagnosis". We worked on identifying similarities in words like this to determine the definition in another form of the word.
