Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Kubra and I discussed differences in food in each of our cultures. I learned that in Turkey, when a man is going to propose to his girlfriend, he must go to the father of the bride first to ask for permission. When he arrives, the father will make him drink black coffee with salt. The idea is that if the man drinks all of the coffee without complaining, then he truly loves the bride and will be given permission to marry her. Kubra said this tradition is still common in Turkey, and sometimes the fathers put pepper in too. Kubra and I also discussed her first experience to Waffle House in the U.S. I explained how waffles are usually seen as a breakfast food in the U.S., because in Turkey they are exclusively a dessert. She said she was very disappointed with her waffles in Waffle House, and I made sure to tell her that there are other places to get much better waffles.
