For our last conversation partner session, my partner and I had a Q&A session where we could ask each other questions about the other persons country of origin and culture. My partner asked me what grade levels constitute American "middle school" and I explained that middle school is typically 6th-8th grade but there are some schools that are K-8th grade. She explained that in China, it is K-6th grade and middle school was 7th-9th grade, making high school only three years long instead of four years like it is in America. Next, we discussed standardized testing and how students advance from elementary school to middle school to high school and eventually to college. Then, I asked her about Chinese celebrities and she shared that the Kardashians are very popular in China. After that we discussed the differences between American films and Chinese films and how American films almost always have happy endings, whereas Chinese films leave you using your imagination. Finally, we talked about stereotypes. She mentioned she had a nephew who was born in America and that she was worried about how he would be treated in American schools. It made me sad at the thought of her nephew experiencing bullying or prejudiced people, but hopeful at the thought that maybe by the time he enters school in a few years, our society would be more openminded and caring. Overall, I really enjoyed talking with my conversation partner and I wish her nothing but the best!
