The Black Lives Matter protests that have been occurring has sparked many individuals to reflect on their own privilege and place in the world. Because of this, it was hard for me to think of a lesson that did not involve this subject. When I asked him about race and racism, he told me that he thought it had mostly ended in the United States. That is the viewpoint shared by many Americans as well and it is because of that belief that these protests are receiving so much backlash. I introduced the terms mass incarceration, benefit of the doubt, throw the book, rampant, and thug. We discussed how racism did not end in America, but rather, evolved into something less visible.
