I observed Dr. Pollock’s composition class to see what methods he uses to promote writing. He began his class by reviewing homework. Then, students read an essay and had to identify the thesis statement, topic sentences, and then asked various comprehension questions. This type of modeling and analysis calls for students to be more engaged in the writing process. He had broken the essay assignment into smaller parts and today they went over their thesis statements in breakout sessions before sharing them with the whole class.
