In this session, I decided to continue working with a slightly decreased reading level (lower intermediate). I choose a story called The Magic Paintbrush, which is a traditional Chinese folktale translated into English. I suspected that using this story would facilitate comprehension as there would be a high likelihood that Hongru would have read it as a child. Sure enough, he had. I was pleased to see that his ability to read out loud has improved since our last session. He still struggles with sounding out words, so I will plan on focusing more on phonics during my last five sessions with him. However, his attention to details is definitely improving in that he is much more likely to pronounce word endings and his ability to produce correct inflections and intonations is considerably better than before. Furthermore, he is much more likely to catch himself when he makes an error, and self-correct.
