Topic/Skill: Booking a hotel and checking-in
Feedback provided to tutee: I had a dialogue prepared for how to book a hotel over the phone. Ahmad picked a destination and a hotel he would like to stay in, and we ran through the dialogue so he could practice the appropriate vocabulary. We then went through another dialogue for the check-in process. I created a list of possible questions to ask while checking-in, and we discussed included vocabulary such as "cot", "amenities", and "complimentary". I corrected his pronunciation and described cultural norms when staying in a hotel and paying for your room.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned about cultural norms regarding hotels in Saudi Arabia. Ahmad told me about booking event space in his country and how hotels are usually used for both the ceremony and the reception for weddings. We then compared traditional wedding customs in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. I learned how something as common as booking a hotel can be different around the world.
