Topic/Skill: Reading a menu and learning how to order at a drive thru.

Feedback provided to tutee: I pulled up a menu from Google and pretended to be the worker at a restaurant. Ahmad and I both turned off our video so we only communicated through audio. Then he pretended to order from the menu as if he was at a drive thru restaurant. I helped him with pronunciation and understanding different food items on the menu. Ahmad was nervous of ordering from a drive thru as he wouldn't be able to ask questions about what items on the menu were, and the restaurant workers would not be able to understand him. We addressed these concerns so that he will feel comfortable ordering over the phone or in a drive thru in the future.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned the importance of incorporating practicality in my lessons. I had a reading lesson planned for my tutoring session, but ended up not using it because Ahmad asked if we could practice interactions and vocabulary for going to a restaurant, a hotel, and other common situations. He said he feels that he learns a lot in his English classes but he lacks vocabulary needed for these situations and does not know how to learn them in context. I realized that in the real world, my reading lesson I had planned would not be as applicable, and now I will try to adapt my future lessons accordingly.
