Topic Discussed: Kubra and I discussed a variety of topics in our meeting on Friday. We began with our new baking hobbies that have begun during quarantine. We compared what we've baked and how successful we had been. We also discussed our families, including our siblings and being the oldest or youngest in our family. Finally, Kubra and I discussed the recent coup in Turkey and what that meant for her as a university student. We talked about the importance of education, both in terms of academics and the social aspect of attending university.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: When we compared our baking endeavors, I learned how to make Turkish yogurt. We compared her traditional Turkish breakfast to my traditional English breakfast, what my family eats. I learned how Turkish yogurt is similar to Greek yogurt, not sweet like the kind usually found in the U.S., but it is also saltier than traditional Greek yogurt. They also usually eat it at dinner with rice, meat, and vegetables as a savory dish. When Kubra explained her situation at university during the coup a few years ago, I also learned more about Turkish current events and the Turkish government from their perspective. I now have a greater understanding of how the current government situation is affecting local people in Turkey and how great differences in opinion are among Turkish people about their current political climate.
