Topic Discussed: The primary focus of our conversation partner meeting was getting to know each other. Kubra discussed her home country, Turkey, and told me about her transition to life in the United States. She spoke about how she initially was surprised and disappointed with Tallahassee, as it didn't live up to her expectations of American life, but now has fallen in love with the city and really feels at home there.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Kubra and I spent a long time discussing the differences in education and healthcare in the U.S. and Turkey. I learned about the Turkish university application system, the differences between undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Turkey, and the language requirements for specific degrees. Kubra learned about extra-curricular opportunities for students on campus, including volunteering, research, and Greek life. She also learned about differences between private and public universities, in-state tuition, and other financial aspects of university in the U.S. Kubra and I discovered that I have had the same operation as her sister did in Turkey. We discussed differences in our medical care for the same procedure, including length of hospital stay, how payment works, and what advice was given to the patient. It was really interesting to see how the same experience for both of us, the operation and attending university, were so different in each country.
