Class: Olivia James Grammar Group 3
Date: May 11, 2020
          10:00 - 10:50
Topic/Skill: This class primarily focused on using the past continuous tense, however, it also incorporated the use of adverbs in sentence formation. The class began with a review of using the past continuous tense in sentence formation. The professor corrected sentences that were written by the students last week and allowed them to practice writing a couple more. Then, the professor discussed using the past continuous case in situations of surprise. To do so, she showed a funny video where people jumped on a bed, fell into the pool, or otherwise had something unexpected happen to them. The students then wrote a sentence about what they saw in the video. For example, the first sentence they wrote was "The woman was riding a hoverboard when she fell into the pool." The professor then went through and corrected the students mistakes and explained why the corrections were made.
Classroom Management: The classroom was managed really well. The students listened attentively and the professor ensured that all questions were addressed and all students could participate in the activity.
Materials: Computer, Youtube, Google Docs
Student Participation: Student participation was fairly high for the activity, although some students did participate more than others. I believe a couple students had technical difficulties that did not allow them to find the Google Doc where the activity was located. Also, since the activity only required students to type their sentence onto the Google Doc, there was not much speaking participation, and no requirement for students to complete the sentences if they did not want to.
Feedback Provided: During sentence correction, the professor gave feedback regarding the past continuous tense and regarding adverbs, as this is the lesson they addressed last week. This was very helpful as the students could go back in their work and add adverbs to their sentences to make them more complex. However, there were a couple errors in the sentences that were not corrected, likely because the class had not discussed those grammar topics yet.
Lesson(s) on teaching: I learned the importance of making the classroom environment engaging for the students. By making sentences based on a funny video students were more likely to be engaged and willing to participate in the activity. I also learned the importance of not correcting every grammar mistake because it could make the students more fearful of making mistakes. The professor always gave positive feedback while she was doing the sentence corrections and the students seemed very receptive to this form of feedback.
