My tutee is Hongru Lu. He is from Wuhan, which he jokingly referred to as "the famous city of China." I spent this first session with Hongru mostly getting to know him and doing intake to asses his English learning needs. He loves anime and pandas and seems to be a gentle and mild-mannered person. He has a degree in public administration and wants to get his Masters in public administration from FSU after completing the CIES course. He has lived in Wuhan all his life until recently and wants to move to Shanghai or Guangzhou after getting his degree. He particularly likes the lifestyle of Guangzhou because they essentially eat seven meals a day along with tea. Hongru has good listening and speaking skills in English but struggles with formal reading due to the more advanced vocabulary and complex sentences. He wants to work on his pronunciation and I helped him to pronounce the letter 'v' by having him hold out an 'f', which occurs in Mandarin, and simply activating his vocal folds to produce the voiced labio-dental fricative 'v'. I plan to work with Hongru to increase his formal vocabulary and reading skills and work on verb conjugation to master the correct tenses in English.
