In this tutoring session, I began by having Hongru practice a series of minimal pairs with the phonemes that he has the most difficulty with. The hardest sound for him is /v/ but he is now able to produce it correctly much more consistently. To practice this sound, I had him pronounce minimal pairs with /w/ and /v/ such as very and wary, vet and wet. Next, I had him pronounce minimal pairs with /l/ and /r/ and was happy to hear that he had little difficulty with this distinction most of the time. The next minimal pair series I had him practice was /s/ and /th/. This gave him a good bit of trouble but he improved dramatically with guided, concentrated practice. After the pronunciation work, we picked up where we left off in "The Strange Library." When reading aloud, Hongru is getting better at consistently pronouncing final consonants and catching his mistakes in general.
