For my fifth tutoring session with Hongru, I started out with some phonics worksheets. we went through one worksheet that focused on the different pronunciations of the 'ed' ending and another worksheet that focused on the phoneme 'v'. Hongru is getting better at pronouncing 'v' but still has a ways to go. He is quite good at producing the phoneme in a word final position but struggles to make the sound at the beginning of words. Although it is generally possible to be understood without correctly pronouncing this sound, it will certainly make speech more intelligible when there is a need to differentiate between words like 'vine' and 'whine', 'very' and 'wary'. After the worksheets we continued with the next chapter of the short story "The Strange Library". Hongru is already making good progress and is becoming a more confident reader with each session.
