In my third tutoring session with Hongru, I continued to work on reading skills. This is the area of English that he struggles with the most. My approach is to utilize the directness of a one-on-one tutoring session to coach Hongru as he reads aloud. This is an example of intensive reading practice. The reason I am opting to focus on intensive reading for this student, is because he has a hard time pronouncing many words intelligibly and needs a lot of support in the basic mechanics of reading in English. We read several short chapters in a book by a short story, The Strange Library, by Haruki Murukami. After that, I had him read a short article on arctic foxes from an ESL website and answer multiple choice questions to test his comprehension.
