My second tutoring session with Hongru was focused on developing reading skills, as this is the area that gives him the most trouble. At the beginning of the lesson we greeted each other and I asked him about his weekend. He showed me some photos of a Chinese beef dish he had cooked over the weekend.  Before the session, as part of my preparation, I had done a somewhat lengthy web search for reading practice materials for ESL students. Some resources I found were much better than others. Knowing that Hongru loves pandas, I found a short National Geographic article and video about these animals. I used the screen sharing feature of Zoom to read the article together with Hongru. I had him read a sentence or two out loud and then I would correct his mistakes and ask him about potentially difficult vocabulary words. I would also read the sentence out loud so that he could hear the correct cadence and pronunciation. In this manner I was able to get a sense of his reading level and help him to understand words in phrases in an organic way as we worked through the text.
