Today I observed Dr. Derrick Pollock's composition class. Dr. Derrick started the class with some Justin Bieber songs and typed out the day's agenda on a shared screen. The first activity of the day was to have the students go to typing.com and practice their typing skills for 10 minutes. Next, he had them journal in response to the following prompt for ten minutes: "What are some traditions in you country that you feel are very important? Does everyone from your country feel this way? Why or why not? He asked the students to try to use the vocabulary word of the week "persevere" if they could in their journal. This was an example of a free writing exercise in which the goal was simply to write fluidly without excessive worry about correctness. After the journal, Dr. Derrick spent a few minutes asking the class about their weekends. Next, he began teaching the class how to construct complex sentences by using dependent clauses. He explained the difference between dependent and independent clauses and had students complete sentences that began with dependent clauses. Examples of sentences he had students complete included " I love the flavor of Coca-Cola because....I drink a can of Coke if...Coca-Cola is a soda which...
