Dr. Rios' Grammar Class
This was the first CIES class I observed and it was a great introduction to teaching English to nonnative speakers. Dr. Rios has an exceptionally kind and welcoming personality and he taught the class with calm confidence and unforced authority. The majority of the class was spent in productive practice of English grammatical forms by asking his students questions and having them attempt answer with the correct form. When a mistake was made, he skillfully identified it and helped the student understand the error without feeling bad in any way. The subject that was focused on for this day's class was the use of gerunds and infinitives. The main takeaway I got from observing this class was to see a real-life example of how having a positive and kind teaching style can keep students engaged and better able to learn new skills and information.
