Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: During this class observation, I learned that being patient with your students is key. Professor Ciappetta, spoke slowly, and gave hand gestures in order to give students an idea of what she was talking about. For example, in the beginning of the class, she asked the class what the word 'solid' means to them. She gave the example of ice to be solid, but she was not talking about the word in that definition, but instead as being 'firm with your words.' She gave a visual of the word to help students understand the concept as it leads to the main topic for the class. She also branched out into liquids and gases to give her students more supplementary terminology to help in their English studies. The topic for the class was to write information found in academia in their own words and give proper citations for that info. As she taught the class, she gave resources for her students to look into to help them with their essays. As she would speak, she would vocalize what she needed the students to understand during the class to ensure the no one was lost. She made sure to answer everyone's questions and let them know if she could not answer them.
At the end of the class, she gave me advice on what I should do in the classroom. She mentioned that with experience there will no longer be a need to use a lesson plan. That, in turn, will allow you as a teacher to manage your time in the classroom to teach what is needed. When I informed her that I want to teach elementary, she informed me of how important visual aids are because children are not cognitively developed. She mentioned the cultural importance of where, I as a teacher, will be placed and use rearcch to tailor to that country's norms.
