Halima
Topic/Skill: Halima and I started our tutoring session with a conversation about her needs as an English language learner. I asked her some questions about her personal life to get to know her a little bit more and then we talked about our experiences with language learning. She is a very motivated student and is very attentive. We focused on idioms this session so we reviewed some idioms that she already learned in class. She knew most of them already, and is very comfortable with speaking with them in context. Then, I showed her a clip of the Lion King where the idiom "thick-skinned" was used. I also taught her three more idioms in context.
Feedback provided: Halima is a very motivated student. The only feedback I gave her was when to properly use certain idioms in context.
Lessons I learned: I didn't realize how often we use idioms in the English language. I learned to be more mindful of when I speak so that the literal translation does not get lost in figurative ones.
