Today I had my 2nd tutoring session and it went wonderfully! My tutee had previously mentioned that he wanted to focus more on listening and pronunciation. As such I looked up words that are usually difficult for Korean students to understand and pronounce.

At the start of class we briefly exchanged pleasantries and then I began showing my tutee some sentences using the difficult words. Some of the which words I expected to be harder were, in fact, rather difficult for my tutee to pronounce but, as it actually turned out, the majority were not. I had similar sounding words prepared for each of the vocab words I expected to be difficult so, once we had covered the sentences once or twice, I created new sentences for my tutee to say including both the difficult word and the other word which was very similar in sound. This proved to be rather challenging for my tutee but I was actually very surprised by how quickly his pronunciation began to improve once I explained precisely where the mistakes he was making were. Another useful strategy I found was to write the exaggerated phonetic sound of the word in the chat for my tutee to see. I wrote words such as "Kwes-chun" for question, "Ph-ul" for pull, and "Droh-wur" for drawer.

At a few points I slowed down and went over some of the material we had covered earlier in the class as I didn't want to totally overwhelm my tutee.

Overall I think this tutoring session was far more of a success that I anticipated! I sent my tutee a list of the sentences we had covered in class (with the exaggerated phonetic spellings as well) and he also has a video recording of the class to go over.
