During this conversation with Khalil, we talked a bit more about what our future plans. I tried to give him a basic sense of what is involved in being a vocal performance major. He recognized the terms 'opera' and 'classical music' but I imagine that the entire concept and motivation of studying to become a classical musician is somewhat foreign to someone raised in a country like Saudi Arabia, where music and dance have been banned up until very recently. Khalil tried to ask about what is involved to go to TCC and FSU. I told him that TCC is probably not a good option for him because it is mainly intended to for students pursuing AA degrees prior to getting their bachelor degree and Khalil is interested in getting a masters degree. Khalil has a lot of difficulty with listening and speaking and there are still many moments in which communication breaks down even when I make great efforts to speak slowly and clearly. I told him that I thought it would be very helpful for him to speak to a native Arabic speaker who teaches at or attends FSU in order to more easily get a grasp of what will be involved should he decide to pursue his masters degree here.
