The topic discussed: We spoke a lot on our majors, what we plan to do when we graduate, Hang introduced me to her husband.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:
My conversation partner for this session is Hang-ah Kim, she is studying at the college of education to be an Elementry school teacher. During our conversation, we spoke about a lot of things culturally, I informed Hang that I will be teaching English in Korea within the next few months. She was very happy about it and gave me advice on what I should do to have a good experience in Korea. She highly recommended that I teach elementary students because they are more eager to learn the language of another country. I learned that student culture in Korea is very intense and the higher up you go the more stressed students are because they have a final examination in November which will dictate whether or not they can go to college. In South Korea, schools start in September they have a break in mid-December and pick up again in March. She recommends that I teach in a more metropolitan area than the rural areas to help me be more comfortable in a foreign country. I also was able to meet her husband who is an electrical engineer at the FSU/FAMU campus both him and Hang recently came to America in February. I was able to share that in America, culturally, people prefer to buy from stores rather than from the markets. She was quite shocked because in her native land they have more farmers markets than they do corporate stores. I also informed her that I am an environmental major and plan on moving forward to become an advocate for environmental justice. I informed her of the history of environmental injustice in indigenous tribes in America and how they are continuously fighting for their rights for a healthy livelihood. There are times in the conversation where she did not know certain words but as a 'genetic defect', in which I had to explain to her. There was also the idiom the 'public eye' which I also had to explain to her and what it means in America. I gave her advice on cities to visit during her time in America such as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Portland, and Denver. We also spoke a little bit about how the COVID-19 virus has been affecting us and our daily lives.
